Triton shells, also known as Triton's trumpet, are named after the Greek sea god Triton. Triton is commonly shown blowing his trumpet shell which gives him the power to control waves. Known for their large size in addition to their allure, these sea snails shun the spotlight preferring to spend their days in the rocks and holes of a coral reef only coming out at night to feed. However, with so much natural beauty, it was time to coax them out into the daylight. The task of immortalizing these intricate shells fell mainly on the sculptor's tools to get the whorls and swirls just right and the painter was content to follow the guidance provided by the animal itself with some additional Herend flourishes.
